Gary
Knapp - Woodworker
I have done
woodworking as an avocation for many years. Over the past year
the planets have aligned
such that I now can devote my time to living my dream of being
a professional artist/craftsman.
I was born
in Wisconsin but moved to Colorado when I was 9. I went all through
school in Colorado and then
moved to Maryland after graduation from Colorado State University.
I returned to Colorado in 1989.
(As of May 2006 I will be a resident of Montana since my wife
got a job at the
University of Montana in Missoula.)
I have degrees
in Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science and worked in the
corporate world.
In 2005 I joined the staff of the Kodaikanal International School
in south India. During the three years
that I was there I taught physics, computer science, computer
graphics – and woodworking. I was able
to acquire a lot of beautiful woods there and brought some back
to incorporate into my woodwork,
Especially rosewood.
My other passion
(besides building hot rod trucks) is the Arts & Crafts/Craftsman/Mission
style of
architecture and design. I am able to incorporate traditional
A&C motifs into my work while
also using some non-traditional contemporary techniques using
multiple woods and other textures
from natural materials like ceramic or slate tiles.
Some of the
tiles are hand produced reproductions of traditional styles which
were popular during
the A&C period around 1900.
